Photo: John Taylor<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">With the Wasatch Range to the west and the Uintas peaking to the east, Park City is a veritable Walden Pond of the West, where art lives in every vista as much as it does in the community. Nowhere is that vital and vibrant spirit more apparent than at <em>Kimball Art Center<\/em>, Park City\u2019s longest-standing nonprofit. Open Tuesday-Saturday, the center features year-round rotating exhibitions of contemporary art from all over the world. Photo: John Taylor<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cContemporary artists are such important storytellers of the world that we live in and connectors between ourselves and the people in the world around us,\u201d says curator <a href=\"https:\/\/kimballartcenter.org\/people\/nancy-stoaks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Nancy Stoaks<\/strong><\/a>. It\u2019s this guiding philosophy that inspired Stoaks for the center\u2019s upcoming exhibition, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/kimballartcenter.org\/exhibition\/resounding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">(Re)sounding<\/a>,\u201d which opens on May 15. \u201cI like introducing people to all different kinds of work,\u201d Stoaks says. \u201cSometimes when you come, you\u2019ll find a beautiful oil painting, but sometimes you\u2019re going to find something completely different, made out of materials that you never thought an artist would use to make work, or just something that challenges your idea of what art can be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201c(Re)sounding\u201d is exactly that: an exhibition that explores the relationship between the audible and the visible, featuring immersive installations, interactive systems, soundscape sculptures and innovative art that \u201capproaches sound not simply as something we hear, but as something we inhabit, shape and are shaped by,\u201d Stoaks says. Sounds cool, right? It will be. Courtesy of the artists and Fraenkel Gallery, San Francisco.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Bernson will be installing a site-specific work of suspended antique tape players for \u201c(Re)sounding,\u201d previously shown at the <a href=\"https:\/\/minnesotastreetproject.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Minnesota Street Project<\/em><\/a>. The tapes will be playing sounds at <em>Kimball<\/em> inspired by the space itself, where Bernson will be \u201cworking with something that was already there, but where I felt the sound could add a component to the space that might one day be there or that one might imagine is there if cued by the sound.\u201d Walking around will be like creating your own personal mixed tape, Bernson says.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cI really enjoy interacting with the physical space, whether it\u2019s a gallery, or museum, or public space, or theater or film set; whatever it is, these become characters in and of themselves, and so I\u2019m excited to see what mysteries the physical space has to offer and how that can be brought to life in a refreshing way by something that I\u2019m creating,\u201d Bernson says. This immersive interactivity will be one of the most unique aspects of the exhibition; works shown like \u201cThe Ambient Machine\u201d by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/yurisuzukilondon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Yuri Suzuki<\/strong><\/a> and the soundscaped quilts of Utahn artists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/marytoscano\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Mary Toscano<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/andrewreaseshaw\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Andrew Rease Shaw<\/strong><\/a> will encourage visitors to engage with the tactile and visual aspects of sound.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>\u201cI really enjoy interacting with the physical space, whether it\u2019s a gallery, or museum, or public space, or theater or film set; whatever it is.&#8221;<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This unique exhibit invites visitors to think about sound in critical ways \u2014 ways that Stoaks says she hopes will inspire a practice of deep listening. Sun Kim\u2019s work explores the physical, cultural and social dimensions of sound, highlighting in particular the experience of sound and the way it is translated for non-hearing people. Similarly, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Christian_Marclay\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Christian Marclay<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s work interrogates the ways sight and sound can both enrich and challenge one another. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/kirkegaardjacob\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Jacob Kirkegaard<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s work draws attention to the sonic landscapes of often unnoticed enviroments; for \u201c(Re)sounding,\u201d his work will explore the massive global waste management system.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201c(Re)sounding\u201d runs through September, in tandem with this year\u2019s <em>Kimball Arts Festival<\/em>.
