Photo: Logan Sorenson<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>*Editor\u2019s note: Within a minute of pausing the interview, we were passed by a man who very intentionally paused to cropdust the table VERY loudly. <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Since the release of their debut record, <a href=\"https:\/\/nadezhda.bandcamp.com\/album\/battery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Battery<\/em><\/a>, just over two years ago, the heavy grunge group Nadezhda have proven themselves as a tour de force in the Salt Lake underground hardcore scene that the members have grown up and come to know each other \u2014 and themselves \u2014 in. Due to the five-piece being two couples, they jokingly refer to themselves as \u201chardcore\u2019s Fleetwood Mac.\u201d Guitarist <strong>Derek Ballard<\/strong>, a lifelong <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nirvana.com\/#\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Nirvana<\/strong><\/a> enthusiast, alongside partner and vocalist <strong>Brighton Ballard<\/strong>, sought to start a project wherein the sounds of grunge met the intensity and conviction of hardcore. Fellow guitarist, longtime friend and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/despitedespair\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Despite Despair<\/strong><\/a> bandmate <strong>Kai Cox<\/strong> was on board with the concept, along with drummer <strong>Trey Bird<\/strong>, who played previously in <a href=\"https:\/\/problemdaughter.bandcamp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Problem Daughter<\/strong><\/a>. The only missing piece was soon found in Trey\u2019s partner, <strong>Erika Bird<\/strong>, the group\u2019s bassist (whom he has known for over two decades adorably).<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>\u201cEven if there\u2019s not a \u201810 years from now,\u2019 there is a hope for the now and the present.\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Beneath the surface layer of Nadezhda\u2019s high-energy catchiness is a powerful battle cry for class consciousness. Any room they play is filled with a raw, collective catharsis felt strongly by the audience members who resonate with the message they put out. It\u2019s a message of rage at the inequitable systems we exist under \u2014 \u201cAll of us are held down by the same conditions,\u201d says Brighton \u2014 but it\u2019s a message of hope nonetheless. The band\u2019s namesake is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Nadezhda-Konstantinovna-Krupskaya\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Nadezhda Krupskaya<\/strong><\/a> \u2014 wife of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Vladimir-Lenin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Vladimir Lenin<\/strong><\/a> and revolutionary Bolshevik leader, educator and political theorist \u2014 but that given first name directly translates to \u201chope.\u201d \u201cEven if there\u2019s not a \u201810 years from now,\u2019 there is a hope for the now and the present,\u201d says Brighton. She adds that the shared joy of shows helps to cultivate that hope for the moment. Derek expresses that participation in arts and culture pushes forth the fight for a better world, and Kai adds, \u201cThere\u2019s always something somebody can do. That\u2019s why physical releases are really important to [us].\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Visual art is a strong component of the Nadezhda brand, thanks to Derek and Trey\u2019s work as graphic designers and Erika\u2019s work in production and prop design. Derek and Brighton also screenprint all Nadezhda merch \u2014 Trey says it\u2019s the first time he\u2019s ever worn his own band\u2019s merch \u2014 and believe in the significance of visual art and physical and print media. \u201cDesign and music for me have always been intertwined,\u201d says Derek, who, similarly to Trey, got into design through album art. \u201cThe power in print is that it lives outside of an algorithm,\u201d Derek says. \u201cIt can\u2019t be controlled. That\u2019s why physical releases are really important to [us].\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Nadezhda now lives the dream of many local Salt Lake City bands, seeing their name on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kilbyblockparty.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Kilby Block Party<\/em><\/a> lineup. Each member describes the way they struggled to keep it together after seeing the email. They mention <a href=\"https:\/\/showmethebody.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Show Me the Body <\/strong><\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.diespitz.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Die Spitz<\/strong><\/a> as artists they\u2019re particularly excited to share the stage with. The flipside of that excitement is anxiety: \u201cThe nightmares have started,\u201d jokes Brighton. Only time will tell if Nadezhda follows their Woodstock \u201999-inspired concept of a nu-metal medley cover set on the <em>KBP<\/em> stage.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Nadezhda fans can also look forward to the release of a once-EP that\u2019s now looking to be closer to a full-length record.
