Unless you\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/ellisitcomedy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Antonio Iacobellis<\/strong><\/a>, the founder of Punks &amp; Punchlines, of course. When Iacobellis explains it, the connection is obvious, as both comedy and punk music are rooted in counterculture. They\u2019re cousins in the entertainment world, and Punks &amp; Punchlines turns it into a family reunion.<\/p>\n<p>These guys nearly had me on the floor through the whole interview, which is no surprise considering it\u2019s a room full of Salt Lake\u2019s finest comedians. Iacobellis was joined by comedians <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/davidhonecomedy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>David Hone<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/realbencorrigan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Ben Corrigan<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/chuckfurycomedy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Chuck Fury<\/strong><\/a> and their producer <strong>Bobby White<\/strong>. Photo: John Taylor\n\t\t\t\t<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>\u201cI dove head first into [comedy] and at the same time was going to a lot of underground punk and metal shows, and I just got the idea. I love both of these communities \u2026 and I want to make something with both of them,\u201d Iacobellis explains. \u201cThe whole idea is: We have everyone laughing together with comedy, and then we all throw each other around in a mosh pit.\u201d What\u2019s the difference between taking the stage at <em>Wiseguys<\/em> and doing your material in someone\u2019s packed basement? Corrigan says it\u2019s the connection. \u201cAt these shows you\u2019re up closewith them, you\u2019re in the room with them,\u201d he says. \u201cYou\u2019re not a show pony, you\u2019re among them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As with any performance, however, there is a chance it won\u2019t go well, or in comic terms, it\u2019ll bomb. When I ask about the wisdom gained from telling a joke that turns sour, Hone is simple in his response: \u201cI love bombing.\u201d This comment is followed by something unfit to print, but he continues, \u201cFailure is the greatest teacher, and every time I bomb it\u2019s because I\u2019m not remembering to have fun,\u201d he says. Photo courtesy.\n\t\t\t\t<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>There is a relatively obvious question in the core principle of Punks &amp; Punchlines, and that is how they handle the sheer change in momentum from fast and loud music to one man telling jokes. Iacobellis said it\u2019s hard, but he has his way around it. \u201cHonestly, I\u2019ve been trying to get more of the musicians to banter with the audience \u2026 or even make jokes themselves,\u201d Iacobellis says. \u201c<strong>The Debasers<\/strong> literally wrote down a bunch of really offensive dad jokes and it was fucking hilarious. Even if they\u2019re not comedians, they\u2019re a part of the show too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Finally, we touch on the topic of hecklers, which White explains are a double-edged sword: \u201c[If you heckle], they\u2019re gonna heckle you back.\u201d Fury continues, \u201cMost hecklers think they\u2019re helping the show \u2026 and you can play with it and use it.\u201d But the difference in venues brings a difference in hecklers. \u201cAt bar shows it\u2019s more likely to be confrontative \u2026 especially if they don\u2019t know there\u2019s gonna be a show that night. They\u2019re just trying to eat their nachos and you\u2019re up there saying, \u2018That cheese looks like my [REDACTED] if it was orange.\u2019 Comedians are never of average intelligence, they\u2019re either smarter than smart or dumber than dog shit,\u201d Fury explains.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s here that I curse a word count, because I wish I could tell you every single clever line and devastating quip we shared over the two-or-so hours I spent with these comedians.
